04/02/2003

Forgive me, but I have lost track of the days. I have not seen TV or Internet in six days and hope to make it a few more. I am on vacation this week and quite frankly taking a hiatus from current world events. I can, however, share my own current events, since you are unlikely to see them reported on television.

Here's how the Travel channel might describe my week off.

I have entered ancient Egyptian temples dating back to 2,000 BC. I have seen red hibiscus flowers reflected on the clear, blue waters of the River Nile. I have tasted jasmine tea and been kissed by the warm, gentle breezes of the Nubian plateau. I have been caressed by the cool depths of the Red Sea and been witness to her majestic secrets. I have been enveloped by the grandeur and plenitude of mother Egypt and been rewarded with a peace of mind and calmness of heart.

Here's how CNN might report it.

I made repeated assaults on the airport. I fended off an army of waiters, pool attendants, and concierges with deft aptitude. I increased my budgetary expenditures to offset the mounting cost of this insurrection on foreign soil. I prevailed over the high seas and led an attack on every dinner buffet across the Saharan landscape leaving no falafel unturned.

Here's what a security camera at a Seven-Eleven might show.

Me sitting on my butt for a week. I read two books in four days. I walked no further than from the hotel lobby to the poolside. Any distance longer than that I took a taxi.

Some people have expressed sympathy for my plight in a far away place. I'd like to ride this wave of attention, but to be fair, I must disabuse them of a false impression. I am not suffering in the wilderness as some would think I am.

Please continue to correspond. I have enjoyed reading people's opinions. And as usual, I will continue to share my experiences here.

Later

Stu
